Feedback: I appreciate...

60-120mins
2-40 people

Constructive relationships and thriving teams rely heavily on consistent and valuable feedback. The "I Appreciate..." exercise is a great way to provide light feedback when team members have established some level of comfort but are still getting to know each other. This exercise encourages sharing appreciation and curiosity towards one another and can be conducted either in-person or online.

Workshop steps

1

The goal of feedback activities is to help groups develop trust and openness, while also enabling individuals to gain self-awareness and insight. Always conduct these exercises with care and a strong understanding of group dynamics. Form a small team or divide a larger group into smaller teams of about 4 to 6 members. Ensure that the teams have some prior experience working together to provide a foundation for giving feedback. For online sessions, create breakout rooms for the smaller teams.

2

Follow these steps: 1. Write down the name of the person you're addressing. 2. Fill in the blanks in the two sentences below, keeping in mind the principles of effective feedback. 3. Sign the message with your name. "To _____: What I appreciate most about you is... What I would like to see more from you is... From, _____."

3

In every smaller team (or breakout room), each member finishes the given sentences using one post-it or digital sticky note for every person in the team. After everyone in the group has finished writing, they share their feedback individually, either by handing over the post-it note to the recipient or sending the virtual sticky note to them during the online session.
